Debt Help – Where do I start?

help getting out of debt

Where to find help when you have too much debt

When you find yourself struggling with unmanageable debt, it is often difficult to know where to begin in looking for assistance and what options may be available to you.

The Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy (“OSB”)  has developed a questionnaire to assist individuals and to point them in the right direction when looking for a solution to their debt problems.  The questionnaire can be found at the following link  Debt questionnaire (canada.ca).

Additional information is also available on the OSB’s website including the following:

  1. If you want to get better at developing a financial plan, check out the following link, You want to get better at managing your finances – Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada.  This link will guide you through the process of evaluating your financial situation, setting a goal and making a plan, and putting your plan into action.

  2. If your debts are getting out of control, check out this link Your debts are getting out of control – Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada.  This link will guide you through the process of talking to a financial professional, talking to your creditors, considering consolidating your debts, provides information on the Orderly Payments of Debts, or entering into a debt management plan.

  3. If your finances are in serious trouble, check out this link Your finances are in serious trouble – Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada.  This link will provide information on Consumer Proposals and the Bankruptcy process for dealing with your debts.  This link will also guide you to the Licensed Insolvency Trustees (“LIT”) in your area that can assist you with reviewing all your options with you.

A LIT is the only professional authorized to administer government-regulated insolvency proceedings, such as a consumer proposal and bankruptcy,  that allow you to be discharged from your debt and to obtain a fresh financial start.  For more information on what a LIT is and information on what they do, check out the following link  What is a Licensed Insolvency Trustee? – Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada.
